Empowering Communities: The Vital Importance of Stop the Bleed Training

In a world where unforeseen tragedies can strike at any time, being prepared can mean the difference between life and death. This is why it is crucial for adults and adolescents alike to learn the techniques of Stop the Bleed. At ProAction, we offer this life-saving course to anyone who wishes to learn. With the skills obtained through Stop the Bleed training, individuals have the power to save lives, whether it’s their own or someone else’s. Today, we will delve into the significance of Stop the Bleed training and its immense impact on communities.

  • Saving Lives Through Empowerment: Stop the Bleed training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to take immediate action during emergencies involving severe bleeding. Such knowledge empowers them to become first responders in critical situations, potentially saving lives before professional medical help arrives. By learning how to properly use tourniquets and pack wounds, participants gain the confidence and ability to make a life-saving difference.
  • Reflecting on the Tragedy of August 3rd: For the people of El Paso, the tragic events of August 3rd serve as a stark reminder that tragedy can strike unexpectedly. It highlights the need for communities to be prepared for unforeseen emergencies. “The tragedy of August 3rd, where so many innocent people died and were injured reminds us that this type of tragedy can happen anywhere and at any time, so it is better to be prepared. Stop the Bleed training is vital in a mass shooting” said Michelle Luevano, Director of Education for ProAction Emergency Services Institute.
  • Effectiveness of Stop the Bleed Techniques: The techniques taught in Stop the Bleed training are simple yet incredibly effective. Acting quickly and properly is crucial when responding to severe bleeding. By applying tourniquets and packing wounds correctly, bleeding can be stopped or slowed down until professional medical help arrives. These life-saving actions can mean the difference between survival and tragic loss of life.
  • A Program with a Noble Purpose: Stop the Bleed is a program that was initiated by the federal government after the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary. The techniques employed are drawn from the experiences of U.S. military members in combat situations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The ultimate goal of this initiative is clear and noble: to save lives. By disseminating these essential skills to the public, communities become better equipped to respond to emergencies and protect one another.

The significance of Stop the Bleed training cannot be overstated. In a world where unforeseen tragedies can strike without warning, being prepared is essential. This training equips individuals with the necessary skills to act as first responders during emergencies involving severe bleeding. The ability to stop or slow down bleeding until professional medical help arrives can be the key to saving lives. As communities come together to embrace the Stop the Bleed initiative, they unite in a shared mission of empowerment and protection. At ProAction, we are proud to offer this life-saving training, ensuring that our community is prepared to respond effectively and confidently when it matters most. EMT STUDENTS EAGER TO SERVE

The morning class of ProAction EMT students is graduating on March 24th. They are the latest group to learn to provide emergency medical care to the sick, injured, or wounded. Part of their instruction was using their knowledge to respond to real-life 911 medical calls.

This class has 20 students, ten women and ten men, each bringing their own background and perspectives. What they have in common could be bravery, but the EMT students say it’s all about the patients.

“I can hardly wait to get out there and make a difference in people’s lives.”

– Bernadette Moore, EMS student and ProAction graduate

Each class is taught by professional paramedics with decades of combined experience. One instructor was a Fort Bliss helicopter paramedic, before that a firefighter, and now an instructor.

“The best part of educating the next generation of EMTs is helping pass on the desire to be educated in Emergency Medical Services,” Instructor Robert Watts said.

ProAction is accepting new EMT students. We welcome you to tour our facility to learn more about ProAction Emergency Services Institute. Call (915) 532-2771 or email us at [email protected] to get started.

ProAction Receives Grant from Truist Foundation to Support Career Opportunities

ProAction was awarded a $10,000 grant by Truist Foundation. The grant is a much-needed boost to ProAction’s year-round efforts to recruit, train and graduate Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in El Paso, particularly in communities of color.

There is a shortage of EMTs in the Borderland, and that has been the case since Covid-19 began. At ProAction, we are proud to train our students with experienced instructors, flexible schedules and invaluable hands-on-training exercises.

“In ProAction courses, students learn everything from first aid to life-saving techniques. Once the students become EMTs, they are guaranteed consistent job opportunities. With the training offered at ProAction, our students are well prepared to offer the best care possible to their patients, which benefits the health and safety of those in our community,” said Dusty Warden, director of Operations at ProAction.

A career in the emergency medical service field is an excellent choice for those looking for job security. ProAction is the best place to learn skills that can be used as a ProAction first responder, ambulance medic, or when employed by a hospital, emergency care facility or doctor in private practice.

“We recognizes the critical life-saving role that EMTs provide in our communities and the ongoing need to recruit and prepare those in the field,” said Bill Toomey, Houston and Central Texas regional president for Truist. “At Truist, our purpose to inspire and build better lives and communities, so we’re proud to support ProAction’s workforce training program that provides critical skill-building and economic advancement opportunities for hard-working individuals who deliver care when we need it the most.”

ProAction Receives $25K Grant

ProAction Emergency Services Institute Receives Healthy Kids, Healthy Families grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas

ProAction Emergency Services Institute announced it was awarded a Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® (HKHF) grant by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX). The HKHF funding will support BCBSTX’s commitment to community-based organizations supporting children and families that focus on health and wellness and target impacts of socio-economic and social determinants of health, as well as economic opportunity.

Career Opportunities for Communities

The shortage of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) is sorely felt in the El Paso community, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic that necessitates hospital transportation and care. For ProAction this is a major opportunity for communities of color, and especially women, to become EMT’s and work in a field that consistently hires.

“ProAction Emergency Medical Services Institute offers a 5-month EMT program that allows students to attend class with a flexible schedule. The training the students receive is invaluable as it prepares them for medical emergencies that range from first aid care to saving lives,”

said Dusty Warden, ProAction, Director of Operations

Upon completion of the course the student must certify as an EMT by the state Texas. There are many opportunities in the medical field that EMT’s are prime for, such working in hospital emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, medical transport or as ProAction first responders.

“We are happy to award these grants that will support and nurture meaningful and transformational projects across Texas,” said Sheena Payne, BCBSTX’s director of Community Investments. “Strategically, it is also important that we continue to aid community-based organizations that are directly supporting children and families with health and wellness equity as well as building foundations for economic opportunity.”

The HKHF program – which centers on nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention and management and supporting safe environments – has awarded more than $20 million in funding since inception, and this year will impact the lives of more than 5 million children and adults in Texas.

EMT Shortage Gets Relief in Borderland

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has approved ProAction Emergency Services Institute for the state’s first pilotAdvanced EMT patch program facilitating Advanced EMT training in Texas. This will help to address the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) shortage in Texas and open career opportunities for certified Advanced EMTs (AEMT).

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent healthcare worker burn-out amplified the already limited pool of emergency medical services professionals. The Open Enrollment course teaches advanced skills, providing a higher level of medical care such as medication administration and intubation.

“We are proud and excited to be able to host this new program. It gives us the opportunity to prepare more EMT’s at the advanced level to help fill-in the EMT shortage gap.” -ProAction Education Director, Luis Ortiz

Typically, you must already be certified as an EMT to progress to Advanced EMT, however this unique pilot program aims to train advanced level providers without having prior medical experience. An Advanced EMT is eligible for a higher level of compensation. EMTs are employed with hospitals, ambulance service providers, doctor’s offices, and federal, city and county government agencies.
ProAction has graduated hundreds of EMT candidates since 2006.

ProAction is the premier EMS training facility in El Paso with flexible classes available morning and evening. Registration is now open for the Civilian to Advanced EMT course. To apply call (915) 532-2771 or email [email protected].
