We are thrilled to announce that Sandra Goode, our esteemed Fiscal Manager at ProAction, Inc., has been chosen as a member of the Leadership Texas Class of 2024. This prestigious selection places her among an elite group of 85 women leaders, handpicked from across the Lone Star State, to participate in the United States’ longest-running women’s leadership development program.

EMT STUDENTS EAGER TO SERVE

The morning class of ProAction EMT students is graduating on March 24th. They are the latest group to learn to provide emergency medical care to the sick, injured, or wounded. Part of their instruction was using their knowledge to respond to real-life 911 medical calls.

This class has 20 students, ten women and ten men, each bringing their own background and perspectives. What they have in common could be bravery, but the EMT students say it’s all about the patients.

“I can hardly wait to get out there and make a difference in people’s lives.”

Each class is taught by professional paramedics with decades of combined experience. One instructor was a Fort Bliss helicopter paramedic, before that a firefighter, and now an instructor.

“The best part of educating the next generation of EMTs is helping pass on the desire to be educated in Emergency Medical Services,” Instructor Robert Watts said.

ProAction Receives $25K Grant

ProAction Emergency Services Institute Receives Healthy Kids, Healthy Families grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas

ProAction Emergency Services Institute announced it was awarded a Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® (HKHF) grant by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX). The HKHF funding will support BCBSTX’s commitment to community-based organizations supporting children and families that focus on health and wellness and target impacts of socio-economic and social determinants of health, as well as economic opportunity.

Career Opportunities for Communities

The shortage of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) is sorely felt in the El Paso community, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic that necessitates hospital transportation and care. For ProAction this is a major opportunity for communities of color, and especially women, to become EMT’s and work in a field that consistently hires.

“ProAction Emergency Medical Services Institute offers a 5-month EMT program that allows students to attend class with a flexible schedule. The training the students receive is invaluable as it prepares them for medical emergencies that range from first aid care to saving lives,”

said Dusty Warden, ProAction, Director of Operations

Upon completion of the course the student must certify as an EMT by the state Texas. There are many opportunities in the medical field that EMT’s are prime for, such working in hospital emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, medical transport or as ProAction first responders.

“We are happy to award these grants that will support and nurture meaningful and transformational projects across Texas,” said Sheena Payne, BCBSTX’s director of Community Investments. “Strategically, it is also important that we continue to aid community-based organizations that are directly supporting children and families with health and wellness equity as well as building foundations for economic opportunity.”

The HKHF program – which centers on nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention and management and supporting safe environments – has awarded more than $20 million in funding since inception, and this year will impact the lives of more than 5 million children and adults in Texas.

You may find yourself needing a CPR class, either now or in the near future.  Getting certified in CPR seems like a daunting task. Also, you’ve got to make time to get this done, find a class, get registered… it just seems like a lot of work.

Well, we are here tAHA Training Center Logoo help. ProAction Emergency Services Institute is one of El Paso’s largest American Heart Association training centers. We offer BLS for Healthcare Providers, Heartsaver CPR, First Aid Classes, and a variety of other options. So, if you are taking CPR to rank for nursing school or if your job requires BLS certification, we have options for you.

We offer a student to manikin ratio of 1 to 1. Accordingly, this means you get your own manikin and do not have to share with others. Our equipment is state of the art, with CPR feedback meters. Studies have also shown that feedback devices help you achieve mastery of critical CPR skills and shorten the time to demonstrate competence. Our manikins provide visual feedback your chest compressions rate, depth, and recoil.

Which class should you take?

 

  1. Face-to-face, instructor-led CPR class: If you are a traditional learner, you can register for our traditional CPR classes. We offerInstructor demonstrating CPR on a manikin classes on weekdays, weekends, and evenings. You can find our entire schedule by clicking here.
  2. Online: We offer AHA CPR classes using a blended learning model. You can take the classroom portion online, from the comfort of your own home. Then, once you have finished the online portion, give us a call to schedule your skills assessment, which takes just about an hour to complete. Once you finish your hands-on portion, we will then issue your AHA course completion certificate. This certification is exactly the same as if you had taken a traditional course.   It is important to know that most schools and employers will not accept a CPR card that does not require a skills assessment.

EMT Shortage Gets Relief in Borderland

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has approved ProAction Emergency Services Institute for the state’s first pilotAdvanced EMT patch program facilitating Advanced EMT training in Texas. This will help to address the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) shortage in Texas and open career opportunities for certified Advanced EMTs (AEMT).

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent healthcare worker burn-out amplified the already limited pool of emergency medical services professionals. The Open Enrollment course teaches advanced skills, providing a higher level of medical care such as medication administration and intubation.

“We are proud and excited to be able to host this new program. It gives us the opportunity to prepare more EMT’s at the advanced level to help fill-in the EMT shortage gap.” -ProAction Education Director, Luis Ortiz

Typically, you must already be certified as an EMT to progress to Advanced EMT, however this unique pilot program aims to train advanced level providers without having prior medical experience. An Advanced EMT is eligible for a higher level of compensation. EMTs are employed with hospitals, ambulance service providers, doctor’s offices, and federal, city and county government agencies.
ProAction has graduated hundreds of EMT candidates since 2006.

Learn Two Steps to Save a Life with Hands-Only CPR.

Did you know that 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes? Statistically speaking, if you are called upon in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a parent, a sibling, or a friend.

CPR increases a person’s chance of survival by double or even triple. Consequently, bystanders play an integral part in increasing survival from cardiac arrest. Because of this, we are asking you to please take 90 seconds of your day to learn the lifesaving skills of Hands-Only CPR. We are pleased to support the American Heart Association and its important mission to increase survival from cardiac arrest.

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with over 600,000 deaths each year. Promptly and adequately performed CPR can dramatically improve someone’s chance of survival. A leading cause of death in children ages 4 and under is drowning. CPR certification for parents and childcare providers can help to decrease the loss of life.

How to “Stop the Bleed”

Stop the Bleed

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. Bleeding control training is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, andStop the Bleed Tourniquet application empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. The more El Paso residents who know how to apply bleeding control techniques, the greater the chances of surviving.

No matter how fast the first responders arrive, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. Those nearest to someone with life-threatening injuries are best positioned to provide first care. You can help save a life by knowing how to stop bleeding if someone, including yourself, is injured.

Learn the Steps of Bleeding Control

Step 1: Stop the bleeding. Now! Expose the wound. Tear clothing away. Immediately apply firm, direct pressure to the wound using gauze, clean cloth, an elbow, hand, or knee — whatever it takes to slow or stop the hemorrhage. If the pressure does not stop the bleeding and the dressing becomes soaked with blood, you will need to apply a tourniquet.

Step 2: Apply the Tourniquet. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, place a tourniquet at least 2-3 inches from the wound. The tourniquet may be applied and secured over the clothing.

Step 3: Adjust the tourniquet. Be sure the tourniquet is at least 2-3 inches from the wound. The tourniquet should be placed between the wound and the heart. Do not apply the tourniquet over a joint, such as an elbow, knee, or ankle.

Step 4: Manually tighten the tourniquet. Clip the sides of the tourniquet together using the buckle and pull on the end strap. Tighten as much as you can.

Step 5: Use the windlass rod to further tighten the tourniquet. Twist the windlass rod in one direction to increase the pressure to stop the bleeding.

Step 6: Secure the windlass rod. Using the windlass clip, secure the rod so that it does not unwind. If there is a velcro strap, also use that to secure the windlass.

Step 7: Make a note of the time. Note the time that the tourniquet was applied. This is important because leaving a tourniquet on too long can cause damage to the tissue. A time-stamp will help caregivers know which patients to treat first.
